Gurus’ Guidance

Whether you’re starting a new lawn or refreshing an existing one, laying turf can seem like a big job. To make things easy, we’ve answered the most common questions our customers ask about preparing, laying, and caring for new turf.

From choosing the right type of turf for your garden to knowing when it’s ready for its first mow, this guide gives you everything you need to grow a healthy, beautiful lawn from day one.

You can lay turf at almost any time of year, as long as the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged. For the best results, aim for spring or autumn — the mild temperatures and consistent rainfall help new turf establish roots quickly without stress from heat or drought.

Preparation is key to a long‑lasting lawn.

  1. Clear the area of weeds, old grass, and debris.
  2. Dig or rotovate the soil to a depth of around 10–15 cm, breaking up large clods.
  3. Rake the surface until it’s smooth and level.
  4. Add topsoil if needed — your soil should be free‑draining but nutrient‑rich.
  5. Firm the surface gently by walking heel‑to‑toe over it, then rake again lightly before laying.

Start along a straight edge, such as a path or fence line.

  • Lay turf in a brickwork pattern so the ends of adjacent rolls don’t align.
  • Butt the edges tightly together — don’t overlap or stretch the turf.
  • Use a plank or board to stand on while working to avoid damaging the freshly laid grass.
  • Once complete, water thoroughly so the soil beneath is moist to at least 10 cm deep.

Water daily for the first two weeks, ensuring the turf and soil stay consistently moist but not waterlogged.
In cooler or wetter weather, you may reduce the frequency. After the first few weeks, gradually ease back to your normal watering routine.
If the edges start to lift or dry out, that’s a sign the turf needs more water.

Mow when the grass reaches around 5–6 cm high — usually about two to three weeks after laying, depending on growth. Set your mower blades high for the first few cuts, trimming only the top third of the leaf each time. Gradually lower the height as the lawn thickens.

Most quality turf already contains starter nutrients, but for a stronger root system, apply a balanced lawn fertiliser about 4–6 weeks after laying. From there, follow a seasonal feeding plan to keep your turf green, thick, and healthy.

  • Dry patches: Usually due to uneven watering — make sure all areas get moisture.
  • Gaps or lifting edges: Press down gently and water well; they’ll re-root as they settle.
  • Weeds: These sometimes appear from old soil; remove them by hand or use a lawn-safe weed killer after the turf is fully established.

With proper care, your new lawn should be well‑rooted and ready for normal use within 6–8 weeks.
By that time, you’ll have a stable, even surface and vibrant, healthy grass ready to enjoy.
