Lawn Mowing Schedule
Mowing little and often is the key to a thick, healthy lawn. Cutting too short or too infrequently can stress the grass, encourage weeds, and leave your lawn looking patchy.
A good mowing routine helps your turf grow denser by encouraging side shoots, while keeping it at a healthy height for the season. The exact frequency depends on the time of year, temperature, rainfall, and how fast your grass is growing.
Follow the mowing schedule below to keep your lawn looking sharp all year round — without scalping it.

Step-by-Step Guide: Mowing Schedule
Step 1:
Wait until the turf has rooted – For newly laid turf, avoid mowing for the first 2–3 weeks. A simple test is to gently lift a corner: if it resists, the roots are starting to establish.
Step 2:
First cut = high setting – Set your mower to the highest height and remove only a small amount of grass. This prevents scalping and reduces stress on young turf.
Step 3:
Follow the “one-third rule” – Never cut more than one-third of the grass height in a single mow. Cutting too much at once weakens the lawn and can cause yellowing.
Step 4:
Spring & summer mowing frequency – In peak growing season, mow 1–2 times per week. In warm, wet spells you may need slightly more often, keeping cuts light each time.
Step 5:
Autumn mowing frequency – Reduce mowing to around once per week, then once every 10–14 days as growth slows. Keep the lawn tidy to prevent damp and disease.
Step 6:
Winter mowing (if needed) – Only mow if the grass is still growing and the ground is dry. Avoid mowing in frost, snow, or waterlogged conditions as this can damage the lawn.
Step 7:
Keep blades sharp – Dull mower blades tear grass instead of cutting it cleanly, leading to brown tips and a stressed lawn. Sharpen blades regularly for a healthier finish.
